Over one-third of Americans are overweight, obese and unhealthy. There are many reasons for this, but manipulative food commercials are making a BIG impact on the health of Americans.
It was dinner time, and my stomach began to gnaw at me. It was time to eat something. Normally I try to make healthy, nutritious choices for a snack or a meal. Instead, I was side-tracked by the television that murmured in the background. Searching the cupboards and refrigerator, nothing seemed to tickle my fancy.
I felt a pull towards the TV room and sat down. The bright pictures, spell binding music and happy grins enticed me. The food commercials came on one after another- hot pizza, juicy burgers, thick deli subs and finger licking good chicken. I could actually feel my mouth water.
As I watched these entrancing commercials, my cravings jumped from one delicious, but unhealthy junk food to another. I didn’t own these cravings at all. They were created by the hypnotic suggestions stimulating my completely open subconscious mind.
My television had me in a hypnotic trance and I was willing to do its bidding. Maybe buy a car, eat unhealthy food, watch Survivor, or beg my doctor for medications I didn’t need or even want.
Muting the ads did help, but as long as I could see the screen, I was still being influenced. The longings persisted even when I left the room. I was hooked. I went to the phone and ordered a thick-crust pizza with all the toppings, BBQ chicken wings and crusty bread sticks. Keep in mind that I am the ONLY one eating all of this junk food.
We are all hypnotized by social media without realizing it.
Subliminal messages fill our subconscious and tempt our taste buds. The more we watch, the more we gain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of obesity has more than doubled among children ages 2 to 5 (5.0% to 12.4%) and ages 6 to 11 (6.5% to 17.0%). In teens ages 12 to 19, obesity rates have tripled (5.0% to 17.6%). Chubby children are at risk of becoming chubby adults and the risk goes up for other things like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some forms of cancer.
According to MythBusters, marketing geared towards children and teenagers is a public health crisis. Laws need to be put into place that will change advertising. Meanwhile, what can we do to counteract the constant barrage of commercial brainwashing from controlling our minds?
What can you do to stop this mind-control?
- Pay attention and BE AWARE! If we know what they are doing, we can deal with it.
- *MUTE ALL COMMERCIALS AND LEAVE THE ROOM OR RECORD THE SHOW AND FAST FORWARD PAST COMMERCIALS.
- *WATCH YOUR SHOWS ON STATIONS WITHOUT ADS.
- *HAVE HEALTHY SNACKS AVAILABLE FOR YOUR CHILDREN.
- *TURN OFF THE TV AND DO SOMETHING ELSE, LIKE SPORTS AND OUTSIDE ACTIVITIES.
What else can you do now that you know the truth?
Skip the movies, television and video games. Play sports, workout at the gym or take up swimming. Get your children to join a soccer or baseball team. Take control of your own lives and that of your children’s. There’s nothing wrong with an occasional pizza, but let’s order it because we really want it, not because we are being brainwashed into submission.
