Fearlessness: Embracing the Child Within

Genius is the recovery of childhood at will.

Arthur Rimbaud

I think there’s something undeniably magical about the fearlessness of children. They approach life with eyes wide open, ready to engage with the world in its entirety, without the reservations that often come with age. This blog post is a celebration of that fearless freedom and an exploration of how we, as adults, can recapture some of that childlike wonder and bravery.

As a child I climbed trees, picked flowers, captured tadpoles and explored everything. After all, I had two older brothers to keep up with on a daily basis. Otherwise, I was left alone playing with my dolls. So I rode skateboards down steep hills, rode on the handlebars of bikes and rolled in the mud with the boys. This was true of my friends too; even the ones who didn’t have wild siblings like mine. I could certainly learn from the young me a few lessons in fearlessness. You probably won’t see me climb a tree now, or even get near a skateboard, but there are many other ways to adopt a little fearlessness in my life. Here’s some suggestions:

Live in the Moment

Children have a natural ability to live in the moment. They’ll strike up a conversation with a stranger without worrying about social norms, dance like nobody’s watching in the middle of a crowded place and chase their dreams with a passion unencumbered by the fear of failure. It’s this kind of fearlessness that opens doors to new experiences, friendships, and achievements.

Dream Big

So, what can we learn from these pint-sized paragons of courage? Quite a lot, actually. Embracing a child’s fearlessness doesn’t mean shirking responsibilities or acting recklessly. Rather, it’s about allowing ourselves to dream big and pursue those dreams with the same gusto as a child chasing butterflies. It’s about dancing through life’s challenges and not being afraid to stand out from the crowd.

Play the Game

Imagine the possibilities if we were to adopt even a fraction of a child’s fearlessness. That business idea you’ve been pondering? Launch it. The dance class you’ve been too shy to join? Sign up. The trip you’ve been dreaming of taking? Book it. Life is too short to be lived on the sidelines, and sometimes, a little bit of childlike fearlessness is the push we need to start playing the game.

Be Spontaneous

In a world that often values conformity and caution, fearless freedom is a breath of fresh air. It’s a reminder that at every age, there’s room for spontaneity, joy, and big dreams. So, let’s take a page out of the children’s playbook and live a little more fearlessly. Who knows what kind of freedom we might find?

Remember, the world is your playground. Swing on the swings, teeter the totter, and glide down that slide of life. Don’t be afraid to join the game and play with gusto. Let the games begin!
